History of Hartwell Chiropractic and Wellness Center
Written by Dr. Jeffery Hartwell Dec, 2023
After working as an associate under the wise and godly mentorship of Dr. Dale Robinson, DC in Molalla for 4 and a half years, Dr. Hartwell and his wife Allison decided to open their own practice in Canby in the Spring of 1992. They had married in August of 1991.
Canby had been Allison’s home town since 1981. So, the transition from Molalla was a logical one, but also it seemed that God was leading it.
Initially Hartwell Chiropractic shared a tiny office on the second floor of the Graham building on 2nd and Grant with Canby’s only Naturopath at the time, named Dr. Prim Dev. At this time there were 2 other Chiropractic clinics in Canby.
Dr Hartwell still appreciates and recalls clearly his very first official patient of Hartwell Chiropractic in Canby. That was his respected Father-in-Law, Pastor Gary Davis. After several months, of steady growth, it became clear that the 2 small treatment rooms of this clinic were no longer adequate, and a 1,000 square foot empty space became available on NW first next to Bikes-N-More. (The facility is currently Canby Trophies and Awards). Allison designed the floor plan to have 3 treatment rooms, a massage room and a therapy room. The 11-foot-high ceiling had to be lowered to 8 feet. This remodel was all done on a very limited budget. So, Dr Hartwell built the front desk, and entertainment centers were repurposed as file shelving units and storage cabinets. Jeff’s father came and helped with the buildout and Allison’s dad wallpapered all of the accent walls. In the midst of birthing their first child, Joshua David, Allison was able to decorate and get the place ready for its grand opening near the end of 1992. HCC continued to grow in this location, and during the 10 years there, the practice started utilizing an associate Chiropractor, Massage therapists, a Naturopath, and an Acupuncturist.
In 2002, the clinic moved to a larger facility (1,700 square feet) across the Highway 99 E in the Hi-way Market place. (The current location of Neighborhood Health Center). There again, the building was a completely bare, wide opened space, and needed to be remodeled. Allison again designed the floor plan. Construction began, and Dr Hartwell again, wanting to save money, built the cabinets, countertops, and ducted the HVAC. At this location, the clinic had 2 massage rooms and 4 Chiropractic treatment rooms, which allowed sufficient space to house 2 associate Chiropractors. It was during this time that Dr Hartwell really started focusing on diagnosing and managing more difficult cases, and earned the reputation of being very thorough in the way patients were evaluated and treated. Allison, having been a full-time stay at home mom for several years, decided to go back to work part-time. Though her degree and previous occupation had been in the field of Social Work, she decided that was not conducive enough to her family life. Allison decided to get her Chiropractic Assistant License and she began working in the clinic as well, and has continued on to the present. She has enjoyed working with her husband, the patients and the staff. The clinic really feels like family.
By 2012, with continued growth of staff and patients, it was apparent that the clinic building was again too small. Now a 3,400 square foot facility became available in the heart of Down Town Canby on NE 2nd St. where the current HCC clinic is located. This time, the carpet, and several usable rooms were already in place, but some walls and spaces needed to be added. Allison, again, designed the floorplan. Again, Cabinets had to be built. Dr Hartwell recalls building them in his garage in Oregon City. A memorable event occurred during those 2 months of remodel. He started listening to the Dramatized Audio Bible on CD the first day of building cabinets, having to turn the CD player off each time he turned the table saw
or router on. The timing worked out perfectly. On the very last day of building cabinets, he finished listening to the entire Bible on CD. What a great way to experience the Bible!
At this facility the Wellness Center continued to enjoy incorporating Acupuncture and Naturopathic, as well as massage and Chiropractic with 3 DC’s.
In the past 14 years, by the grace of God, this clinic has lived through the challenges of Obama Care requirements, adapting to thousands of new ICD10 codes, Covid mandates, and transitioning from paper to digital files. Hartwell Chiropractic clinic has always been dedicated to the Lord, for ministry purposes, understanding that Spiritual health is of eternal value, in addition to offering quality physical healthcare. Currently, after 35 ½ years in practice, Dr Hartwell has decided to hand the baton off to his trusted associate Chiropractor, Dr Daniel Huschka, and his wife Emily who will be the office manager. He feels confident that the clinic will continue to uphold the top-notch reputation it has enjoyed. This is because the other Drs and the staff have the compassion and skills to carry out the vision of thorough, quality alternative healthcare that was started by the Hartwells.
Dr and Mrs. Hartwell will be moving to NE Tennessee to run a small wedding venue on their new property, and learn how to raise cattle on their acreage. Dr Hartwell will likely work part time for a local chiropractic clinic, and is excited to serve alongside Allison at their new church in various ministries.
